Since the reopening of South Barstow Street, several business owners have embarked on their own improvement projects, which are creating a new attraction toward the downtown area.
Adding to the list is Greater Midwest Mercantile. Having been situated on South Barstow for 27 years, this will be the first renovation project since the owners moved in. Owner Melanie Madis said she never particularly cared for
the front of the building and hopes that a brighter-looking façade will cater to customers who are looking for the unusual.
Madis said current signage will be removed and replaced. Underneath the sign, metal sections will be replaced in order to better complement the upper exterior. In the interior of the building, Madis said they'll be redoing the walls in the entryway.
Total costs will reach about $9,000; of which, $5,000 will come from Downtown Eau Claire, Inc., and it's Clearwater Grant Program. Madis hopes to begin renovations this fall.
