Urban Living Tour Showcases Six Downtown Apartments

After taking a year off in 2012, the Urban Living Tour is coming back to downtown Eau Claire. The event, hosted by Downtown Eau Claire, Inc. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 8, will be a tour of six apartments in the downtown area.

The tour will feature brand new apartments as well as some older ones that have been remodeled. Included this year are the Riverfront Terrace apartments in Phoenix Park. The building includes efficiency, one and two bedroom and two bedroom with a loft apartments. Riverfront is the newest building in the Phoenix Park area, said Stuart Schaefer, president of Commonweal Development and owner of the apartment building.

While the Riverfront Terrace apartments are full now, Shaefer said they still want people see the space. "We look forward to having people stop and view one of the units and get a better feel for the property," he said.

Susan Jakober, owner of Interior Arts interior design, has been on the planning committee for the Urban Living Tour since the start and is designing and staging two of this year's apartments. Many of the apartments are occupied, already filled with furniture and just require basic adjustments, Jakober said. The challenge comes when working with an apartment that is empty, she said. "Then you have to bring in everything so it looks like somebody lives there," Jakober said. "It will need additional accessories right down to towels."

The apartment above her business downtown is one that will be featured on the tour. Unlike the others that are brand new or newly remodeled, the apartment is older, Jakober said. It will function as a "before" visual and will include plans and illustrations of what it will look like after being remodeled later in the summer, she said.

Even though some of the spaces are already occupied and aren't available to rent, Jakober said it's still beneficial to see the tour and is similar to a parade of homes. "The two that I'm working on are new, so it's almost like going into a new house, except it's an apartment in an urban setting," she said. "It's really interesting to see the different styles and different ways that people live downtown."

Tickets for the tour are $5. They will be available for sale at the DECI booth during the Open Air Festival of the Arts and at each tour location on the day of the event. The six apartments to be shown are located at 315 Riverfront Terrace, 211 Wisconsin Street, 202 ½ Gibson Street, 310 Eau Claire Street, 309 ½ S. Barstow Street and 208 S. Barstow Street.
