Posted: October 10, 2017 Winners Announced for the Jump-Start Downtown Business Competition

EAU CLAIRE, WI – Downtown Eau Claire, Inc. (DECI) announced the winners of the thirteenth annual Jump-Start Downtown Business Competition during an Awards Luncheon today. The reception was held in the Royal Credit Union Corporate Center at 200 Riverfront Terrace in Downtown Eau Claire, and was catered by the sideBAR on GRAND. There were 6 applicants for the 2017 competition with 3 winners.

The Jim Mishefske Award (grand prize award) of $5,000 for start-up capital sponsored by Royal Credit Union, a Brand Development Strategy Session with JB Systems, a $500 Advertising Credit with The Leader-Telegram, and the DECI Media Package, was awarded to Adam and Alicia Condit, who entered a business plan to open Blue Ox Running on South Barstow Street. Blue Ox Running is a specialty retail store providing premium products and services to the running and fitness community.

The Honorable Mention Award of $1,000 for start-up capital sponsored by Xcel Energy, along with a Spin Vision Virtual Tour Combo Package and DECI Media Package, was awarded to Shantel Welk, who entered a business plan to open Sky Yoga. Sky Yoga is a new studio on South Barstow Street that teaches many forms of yoga and focuses on overall health and wellness.

The Innovative Idea Award of a $1,000 scholarship to the Entrepreneurial Training Program at the Small Business Development Center was awarded to Elizabeth De Cleyre, Jill Heinke Moen, and Margaret Leonard for Dotters Books. Dotters Books is a local, independent, women-owned and operated bookstore in Downtown Eau Claire opening in the next year.

The luncheon also featured keynote speaker Blayne Midthun of Ramone’s Ice Cream Parlor, last year’s Jump-Start Grand Prize Winner. He recounted their last year of opening a successful ice cream parlor and the impact of Jump-Start and the broader Downtown community. Attendees were also treated to their pick of seasonal and best-seller ice cream!

“The Jump-Start Business Competition is one way DECI can help stimulate entrepreneurial activity in the Downtown. We were excited to have six competitive and viable businesses apply, four of which will be open by the end of October,” said Ray French, Business Assistance Specialist with the City of Eau Claire. “We congratulate all of the applicants and look forward to supporting all of them as they create their dreams in Downtown Eau Claire.”
