UW-Eau Claire and other partners that are working on a new event complex on Menomonie street have unveiled plans for the development.
The group announced the preliminary design for the John H. and Carolyn O. Sonnentag Event and Recreation Complex Wednesday morning. They call for a major event center that would be nearly 130,000 square feet. It would have seating for almost 5,000 people, and could hold almost 6,000. It would also have YMCA, UW-Eau Claire and Mayo Clinic Health System wellness, aquatics and recreation facilities. That part of the complex would be nearly 150,000 square feet. It would also have surface parking to serve the entire complex, and land for possible future business development. The Blugold Real Estate Foundation owns enough property to house the entire complex.
The plans call for the center to be a home for UW-Eau Claire men's and women's basketball games, men's hockey games, basketball and other athletics tournaments, large indoor concerts and other entertainment or sports events.
In August 2014, the university and others announced a near-$10,000,000 pledge in money and land from UW-Eau Claire alumni John and Carolyn Sonnentag and County Materials Corporation for the project. Fundraising hasn't started, and a construction timeline has not been announced. A university news release said the planning process is expected to continue with the goal of "proceeding with the project in the next few years."
