After inheriting a trailer load of metal computer panels from a friend, Hastings, Minn., sculptor Dale Lewis knew his next sculpture would be titan-sized.
Drawing inspiration from the Trojan horse at Mt. Olympus Outdoor Theme Park's Wisconsin Dells location, Lewis fashioned his own version of the structure that for the past several months has been on display as part of Sculpture Tour Eau Claire.
Out of 32 sculptures on the 2015 tour, Lewis' massive "Trojan Horse" garnered the most votes in the People's Choice category, earning 123 votes, or 27 percent of votes cast, according to Sculpture Tour's website (sculpturetour.org). Three sculptures were not eligible for the award.
"We had triple the votes we did last year," said Julie Pangallo, executive director of the tour.
Two other sculptures also were honored.
The Best in Show Bronze went to Bobbie Carlyle's "Devotion" of a mother and child. Best in Show Other Material's award winner was Al Kuhl for his motorcycle sculpture "Rough Rider."
The People's Choice award winner is purchased by sponsors and gifted to the city, which then chooses its fixed location. The horse's purchase price is $12,000. Sculptures range in price from $1,200 to $65,000.
"I'm honored and excited about having the horse displayed here permanently in Eau Claire," Lewis said.
