Freezing temperatures couldn't dampen the Huse family's Christmas spirit Saturday.

Tim and Angela Huse of Eau Claire and their daughter Heaven braved the cold temperatures to attend Downtown Eau Claire Inc.'s "Christmastime in the City" Saturday afternoon.

The event was held in the open lot at the intersection of Barstow Street and Grand Avenue in downtown Eau Claire. Among the attractions were horse-drawn wagon rides, cookies and hot chocolate, a pet reindeer and later in the evening the lighting of the large Christmas tree that stands in the lot.

Heaven Huse said she enjoyed the event. She met Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus. She took a ride on a horse-drawn wagon. And she ate cookies and drank hot chocolate.

"It was cool," Heaven Huse said, although she said she forgot what she wanted for Christmas when it came time to tell Santa Claus.

She said she especially enjoyed seeing Mrs. Claus.

The purpose of Christmastime in the City is to provide the community an opportunity to create special holiday memories, according to Downtown Eau Claire Inc.

The agency said about 1,000 people usually come to the event, which lasts throughout the afternoon.

Event-goers who took a wagon ride were treated with a stroll through downtown Eau Claire.

Those who showed up Saturday had to contend with the cold. The Bank Mutual sign that stands above Grand Avenue read 2 degrees at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Danielle Stultz of Eau Claire brought her 2-year-old daughter Kylee to the event along with Alyssa Ramos, 6, and Ariana Ramos, 3, whom she was baby-sitting.

Ariana Ramos said she isn't a big fan of Santa Claus - who scared her - but she is willing to take his presents on Christmas morning.

Stultz said the girls convinced her it was a good idea to come out to the Christmas event.

"Santa for you guys and pizza for us (adults)," Stultz said to the girls, noting she planned to pick up some pizza while in the downtown.
