New mercantile business set to open in downtown Eau Claire

Eau Claire (WQOW) – Red's Mercantile, a new business in downtown Eau Claire located on Dewey Street, is preparing to open it's doors.

Becca Cooke is the owner, and she's also an Eau Claire native. Simple, intentional, and functional Scandinavian-based products will make up most of the store. Cooke says she works directly with artists from all over the Midwest to hand pick the store's unique collection of things like blankets, pottery, and canoe paddles.

"This is a great opportunity to build this district and this area of downtown and I don't think Eau Claire really has a store that sources from all around the Midwest," Cooke said. "There's a lot of great local retailers and folks like that but I think this kind of draws from further out than just Eau Claire."

Cooke believes her business is filling the right need at the right time, alongside other downtown development projects. Her grand opening is this Saturday. And as for the name of the shop, Cooke said it's a nod to her nickname, Red. She earned it because of her beautiful red hair.

Red's Mercantile is one of a handful of new businesses being welcomed downtown in the past few months. Latitude 44 Yoga Studio opened in August and Butter B Bakery opened in October. The convention center at the Lismore also opened in October, and the hotel is set to book guests in early 2016. DECI says the downtown area still has a storefront vacancy between 7-9 percent.
