A ceremonial groundbreaking ceremony was held Tuesday for Haymarket Landing, a new retails and apartment complex in Downtown Eau Claire. The Haymarket Landing name pays homage to the historic site as a place for public gatherings and commerce.
The mixed-use building will have retail and commercial space on the first floor and five stories of apartments above. Plans call for 119 apartments that will range in size from studio to four bedrooms. The apartments will be suitable for university students but also would be available to non-student tenants. The building also includes parking, bicycle racks and various amenities that take advantage of the location and views.
Haymarket Landing is being privately developed, constructed, owned and operated; its funding is entirely separate from the proposed Confluence community arts center. But the property taxes it generates will play an important role in creating the necessary funding for both the arts center and the public plaza that is being planned between Haymarket Landing and the arts center.
"Private dollars are being used to develop a major new building that will significantly contribute to South Barstow revitalization, and the additional tax revenue realized from Haymarket Landing will be leveraged to invest in the public and philanthropy-funded arts center and public plaza," said Dan Clumpner, a principal at Commonweal Development. "This groundbreaking marks the beginning of a win-win-win for the overall Confluence Project and a continued downtown Eau Claire comeback."
