Gov. Scott Walker pledged strong support for the proposed Confluence Project during a speech Monday in Eau Claire.
While the governor indicated details are still being worked out and would depend on how much funding the UW System requests for the proposed $77.2 million project in downtown Eau Claire, he publicly expressed his backing and expressed confidence the proposal would become a reality.
"We want to be a player in that going forward," Walker told the roughly 230 people attending an Eau Claire Area Chamber of Commerce luncheon at Florian Gardens.
The governor even identified a potential funding mechanism, saying the state could used nonstate grants to help fund the $25 million developers are seeking from the state. He noted that the state previously has never made nonstate grants of that size.
Walker said he appreciates the public-private partnership backing the Confluence Project, which would include a proposed performing arts center, student apartments and commercial space, and indicated he recognizes its economic development potential as well.
